Chapter 8 Journal Entries

Journal Entry 29:
1. Write about an experience when you felt one of the following emotions: FRUSTRATION or ANGER, FEAR or ANXIETY, SADNESS or DEPRESSION.

1. I was always super close to my papa, ever since I was little. I was with him all the time, I was his first out of four grandchildren so we bonded like no other. For as long as I can remember he always had breathing problems, but still seemed to be the happiest man ever. Last August he went into the hospital and we were in for a big surprise. He was very very sick, but with him being sick before, he was usually good with healing and pulling himself through. The next four months were a rollercoaster for us, he would get better and get worse again. At the end of October he was very sick and went to hospice, he was there a little shy of a week. I continuously talked and tried to tell myself that this was the end. I thought I was ready and prepared for him to leave but when I got the call, the news hit me like a train. Never had I ever been this sad before. The next week was hard, but I think the days after that were worse. While everyone's lives moved on, mine stood still. Not being able to call him, text him, or see him was hard. At the end of November, I knew my birthday was coming up and knowing my papa wouldn't be here for killed me. He's been gone for five months now and its still harder than ever.  There are still certain things I do that upset me and make me depressed but I know everything will be alright in the end.

2. Write about an experience when you felt HAPPINESS or JOY.

2. Pregnancies are a long, long, long, time period to get through. All three times my mom has been pregnant with my siblings, I felt like it took forever for the due date to come. Each time my mom has had one of my siblings, I've been there. Holding the babies for the first time are probably some of the happiest moments I've lived. Looking into their eyes for the first time and finally being able to hold them and cuddle with them are definitely memorable moments. I love watching them grow up, being a big sister of 2 beautiful girls, and a handsome little boy are things I will forever cherish.

3. Write about an emotional changes you experienced as you described each of these two emotions. What did you learn or relearn about how you can affect your emotions?

3.  Hearing bad news or seeing something I don't want to see has always been good at changing my mood from good to bad and vice versa. One thing I have learned is to not let others affect or change the way you feel about something. Do what makes you happy, or what works to your best ability.

Journal Entry 30:
1. Write about a recent time when you felt overwhelmed, angry, sad, or anxious.

1. At the beginning of freshman year I started college classes. It was very overwhelming because I was in all honored high school classes, I was a cheerleader, and I was doing dual enrollment. With it being my first year in high school, my first time cheering, and my first time taking college classes, I was taking on a lot and had a lot to get used to.

2.Identify two or more strategies that you could use in the future when you experience this emotion.

2. In the future when I experience this emotion, I can remind myself that not everything is easy. I will tell myself that I will get used to it and find a way to solve my problem. I will not let it take over my emotions because that is when things start to go downhill.

Journal entry 31:

1. Write about a specific past event when you experienced flow in any art of your life.

1.   A time where I experienced flow in my life was when I used to play soccer. Everything just came together when I was on the field. I felt no problems, and everything just felt right. I would run down the field with not a care in the world. I was always happy on the field, no matter what happened. Soccer was my passion, something I loved to do and when I played it everything went away and that's all I would focus over.

2. Write about your perfect work of the future, the kind that you believe will create the most flow in your life.

2. The perfect job for me would to be able to travel around the world and take pictures. I love taking pictures and traveling and think combining them would create a fantastic job. I would work different times of the day depending on when or where I saw something picture worthy. I would want to travel with other photographers or people that I love. I would enjoy this more because I do not want a job where I am stuck in the same building all day with people I am not very fond of. I would much rather do something I enjoy and something that means to me rather than something I just do to make money.

32 DAY COMMITMENT

3. Create a 32 day commitment form. For the next 32 days put a check beside each day that you keep your commitment.
Because I know that this commitment will keep me on course to my goals, I promise myself that everyday for the next 32 days I will take the following action: I will redo a math problem when I get it wrong until I find my mistake.

DAYS:
1.  yes
2. yes
3. yes
4. yes
5. yes
6. yes
7. yes

27. yes
28. yes
29. yes
30. yes
31. yes
32. yes
It was difficult sticking to this everyday but with dedication I got it done.

4. My goal is to redo a math problem when I get it wrong until I find my mistake.  As I begin my 32 day challenge I wonder if I will be able to stay dedicated the whole time. I'm hoping that I will stick with this and continue to stay committed for more than 32 days. I am usually good with keeping promises so I think I will be able to stay with it.

2. Share the details of a personal experience in which you did or did not take personal responsibility and explain the effects of this choice on your life.

2. B. One instance where I did not take personal responsibility is last year when I took a math class. I didn't like the way the teacher taught, didn't think they were a good teacher, wasn't understanding anything I was learning and I gave up. The effects of this were not good, my grade dropped and was a C on the interim, a grade my mom was not happy with, I had the rest of the 9 weeks to pick my grade up, I took responsibility of my learning and brought my grade up before report cards came out.

3.Write what you have learned or relearned about how you use language: Is it your habit to speak as a victim or a creator? Do you find yourself more inclined to blame yourself, blame others, or seek solutions?

I am guilty of speaking as a victim. When I get mad I tend to blame things on others. I am going to change though and speak as a creator. Taking responsibility for my actions and staying focused on my education is something I will from now on do.

Chapter 2: Journal entry 7

 CHAPTER 3

  1. The best advice was given by Professor Gonzales. I agree with him when he says learning should be fun. Students tend to get bored easily by teachers that teach in basic ways. Engaging in fun, or interesting activities can help more students get involved in whats happening in class. I know this from experience, I work and learn a lot more whenever the teacher gives us an assignment other than reading from a book. Hands on experiments, field trips, and movies or videos are a big help in learning. For example, many students would learn more in a chemistry class if they did a lab about chemical reactions rather than if they just read and answered questions about it. I think the worst advice came from Professor Buckley. Students being able to choose their own assignments is bad news. A majority of them will choose the easiest or quickest assignments they. Not having a set deadline for an assignment sounds crazy to me because then a student has no structure or rules in school. Being able to choose assignments won't work again because then students won't learn all the information the class has to offer.

Chapter 3.

Journal Entry 9:
1. Fill in three or more of your own desired outcomes for this course and/or this semester.

DESIRED OUTCOMES

  1. Finish all classes this semester with an A+
  2. Learn and remember at least two new strategies for school or life.
  3. Always have a GPA above 3.5

VALUE

  1. An A+ in all my classes will bring my GPA up and help me look better when I apply for college.
  2. Learning new strategies will help me make better choices and succeed even farther in school.
  3. Setting your standards high will make you work harder.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES

  1. Feeling confident
  2. Having fun
  3. Retaining what I learn
  4. Not getting frusterated

VALUE

  1. I want to feel confident in my work and know that I am smart enough to take on work assigned to me.
  2. I want to enjoy the class I take, not getting annoyed when I have an assignment to do.
  3. I want this class to stay with me, I want to remember what I've learned and not forget it, because if I don't retain the information then the class does me no good.
  4. I don't want to get upset over assignments. I want to turn in everything on time so I'm not rushing last minute to get everything done.

My score was an 81. My value score is a 9 out of 10 along with my expectation score. I did not score them 10 out of 10 because I want to do good in college, and I am going to push myself until I do good, but I know I won't do perfect. To keep these scores high, I am going to stay focused on school and keep myself headed in the right directions.

Entry 10:
MY LIFE PLAN

4. Not have any zeros in classes

2. Making a life plan and making short and long term goals help you keep yourself on track and going in the right direction. This will keep me motivated to do my best in school and keep trying for good grades.

Journal entry 11.
Sitting down, ready to walk across the long stage I loudly hear my name called. I nervously stand up and walk up to get my High school diploma. They give me my AA certificate and give a quick speech about how I am graduating with my AA degree. I walk to the other side of the stage while the audience applauds and my family shouts and hollers.

 Journal Entry 12:
1. I want to graduate high school with my AA degree.

I believe that dedication will help get graduate with a better education if you are dedicated. Being into school is important for your education.
-I keep everything as organized as possible. All of my school work is put into certain places so that I do not have to worry about it being misplaced or lost. I have a different folder for each class and each folder is labeled for certain things.Being disorganized can cause you to fall behind and make your school life a mess.
-Relaxing is such an important quality to have. Being relaxed about a situation will make it easier to get through it. Being or causing yourself stress over something, only makes it worse. Stress works you up and sooner or later you're more worried about calming down than what it is that you have to do. For example, when you have to take a test, relax, study and do your best and your outcomes will be better than if you were stressed or un-relaxed.

I spent most of my time in the not important, not urgent category. A lot of the 15 events were lazy things. This showed me that I need to do more productive things during the day.

Journal entry 14:
1.Write about the system that you presently use to decide what you will do each day.
When I get home from school, I know my algebra homework needs to be done before my other homework. This is because i know it takes me longer to understand and do my math work than it takes me to do work in other subjects. I try to miss classes as little as possible because I believe absences will help you drastically fall behind.
2. Write about how you could use or adapt the five management tools in the chapter to create a leak proof self management system and improve your outcomes and experiences.
I could use my iPhone calender to schedule and store my events in. I don't necessarily want to use any of the other tools because I like the way I remeber to do things now. I like writing what needs to be done in a note on my phone and setting it as my wallpaper.

Journal  entry 15
1. From your plan in journal entry 10, copy one of your most important and challenging short term goals from your role as a student.

CHAPTER 5

 Journal Entry 17:

1. An outer obstacle that stands between me and my success in college is my Algebra 2 Honors class.

2.Someone besides me who could help me overcome this outer obstacle is a tutor.

3. How this person could help me is by helping me understand the lessons that way they don't take up so much of my time.

4. An inner obstacle that stands between ne and my success in college is me being shy.

5. Someone besides me who can help me overcome this inner obstacle is my friends.

6. How this person could help me is by introducing me to more people.

7. The most challenging course I am taking in college this semester is US History to 1877.

8. This course is challenging for me because I can't get myself interested in history topics.

9. Someone besides me who can help me overcome this challenge is a history teacher or student that enjoys history.

10. How this person could help me is by showing me how to engage in history.

2. To overcome these challenges, I could get help from peers that go through or have gone through the same challenges. I could study and work as hard as possible until I understand what I am being taught.

Entry 18:
1.
ME: I am so done with this math class.

IG: Why? What's wrong? (Expansion)

ME: I do not understand any of the stuff we've learned these past few days.

IG:  You seem bothered that you are not getting the material. (Reflection)

ME: I could raise my hand and ask questions but I'm not a fan of that stuff.

IG: What do you mean when you say, "stuff like that?" (Clarification)

ME: I've always been shy.

IG: I see (Silence)

ME: I don't have the nerves to speak up.

IG: Take control of your learning.

2.  From this conversation I learned that I can control my thoughts. I don't have to listen to what my inner guide always says. I can control what is said and the way I think.

Entry 19:
1.Walking through the mall with Kelly and Maggie, I started to get annoyed. No matter what store we went into, we kept running into these three boys that would not leave us alone. Everytime we turned around they were constantly making comments and saying things to us. One of the kids would would not stop talking about how I had a " hot body." We got so fed up with them that we left the mall and decided we would find another day to shop instead.
  2. If the boys would have simply said I was pretty instead of talking about my butt and body I would have felt respected. I believe that commenting on a girls body, especially a girl you do not know, is disrespectful.

Entry 20:
1.
Dear math tutor,
I am in desperate need of help. I am in Algebra 2 honors and it is killing me. I have never been this confused in a class before. Everyday I walk into class with my mind running 100 mph, annoyed, because I didn't understand the homework assigned to us the night before. I have a C right now and I am determined to bring it up to a B before report cards are issued. I was wondering if you have any tutor sessions open. I will take any time, I am free any day of the week. Thanks in advance.
                                                                                                      Brycelyn.
2. I am guilty of blaming my math teacher with my struggle of not being able to understand the material he teaches. I am guilty of leveling a lot though as well. I am usually a very honest person. I speak what's on my mind. I have no problem with expressing my opinion. \

Page 150:

Professor Rogers-  3
Anthony- 4
Sylvia- 2
Donald-  1
Anthony was least responsible for the groups grade. He worked, arranged meet up places, and was determined to get an A. Professor Rogers was more responsible because she gave Anthony irresponsible partners, but she had a good point when she used the Judge analogy to explain to Anthony that it was fair. Like Anthony said, Sylvia was always picking fights, she was more worried about Anthony leading the group than about getting her work done. Donald didn't care about anything in the group, he barely put any effort into the project.

CHAPTER 6

Entry 21:

1. This girl and I were really close, we did everything together. For a while we were inseparable, we hung out all off the time. She started to make bad choices and we started to drift apart. She started partying and drinking a lot and I made the choice of ending the friendship because I didn't want to go down the same road she was on.

2. An area I am off course of is making time to study. Lately I have been pushing off studying for as long as I can. The part of my life that's farthest away from where I want it to be is finishing my algebra 2 honors class with an "A." If I continue to stay off course, my grades could start to go down.

Entry 22:
1. My self defeating behavior pattern is that I don't put up with drama. I think nonsense is a waste of time, and it annoys me more than anything. I got this habit from my mom. She is the same way as I am about people that have drama or annoying attitudes or personalities. If you are rude or annoying, we will not give you the time of day. For example, if someone constantly complains about something they do, but don't try to prevent it, then I will stop associating with them.

2. A self defeating thought I have is speaking my mind. I get annoyed very easily and I tell people how it is. If I don't like something, I will tell you that I don't like it. I don't use this in a rude manner, but I tell people how I feel. I'm not afraid to express my opinion.

Entry 23:
IG: (1) In what area of your life are you off course?
Me: Doing my homework
IG: What do you mean? (expansion)
ME: I always push my my homework off until late at night.
IG:  (2) What self defeating thought patterns of yours may have contributed to this situation?
ME: Well, maybe procrastinating.
IG: (3) Well change your mindset. What different thoughts could you use to get you back on course?
ME: I could remind myself that homework contributes a lot to keeping good grades.
IG: (4) What self defeating emotional pattern of yours may have contributed to this situation?
ME: Me easily getting annoyed
IG: (5)Well, what different emotions would get you back on course?
ME: Being focused and dedicated to finishing my work.
IG: (6)What self defeating behavior patterns of yours could have contributed to this situation?
ME: I waste a lot of time I could be using to do my homework.
IG: (7) What different behaviors could you choose to get back on course of your goal?

CHAPTER 7

Journal Entry 25:
Describe an important course correction you have made in the past.

1. Before in a math class I didn't do my homework because the assignments weren't worth a lot. It killed me on my tests because I didn't know any of the information since I didn't do my homework. I started doing my homework and my test grades increased as well as my grade in the class.

Identify where you are presently of course and offer a plan for making a course correction
2.In a class I am taking right now, I am supposed to read a chapter a week and I skimmed and only found the answers to the questions on my quiz which wasn't a good idea. I had to take a mid term and since I didn't read the chapters I didn't do well on the exam and my grade went down. I started reading like I am supposed to and hoping that I can get my grade up to where it needs to be.

Journal Entry 26:

Write about the most challenging course you are taking this semester
1. This is my first time taking online classes. With high school and college classes together, I am pretty busy with my school work. I am not a big fan of history so my most difficult course right now is my online US History to 1877 class. I am unfamiliar with the online classes and adjusting to them has been weird. I enjoy sitting in a classroom and learning much more than I like reading a book. I don't retain much information from reading, and that is our assignment every week in the class, so the class has been difficult for me.

Using what you know about the way you prefer to learn, write about choices you can make that will help you learn this challenging subject more easily.
2. I am a doing and feeling learner. I like to know how, how it will help me and how I will be effected by it. I can research the topics I my history class to try and get my questions answered. I can find out how and why things happened and maybe it will help me become more interesting in the subject.

Journal Entry 27:
Make a least of at least 10 probing questions you could ask your two friends to help you find the "truth" and make a wise choice about whether or not to take Dr. Skinner's class.
1. What teaching method do they use?
2. What type of assignments?
3. Is the professor friendly?
4. What kind of personality does he have?
5. Is he easy to talk to?
6. Does he get angry a lot?
7. Is he easy to communicate with?
8. How involved is he with his students?
9. What type of learner would do best in his class?
10. What are his good an

Write a logical argument that explains which character you think is most responsible for the group's grade of D in the case study "Professor Roger's Trial."
2. Donald is most responsible for the groups grade being a "D." I know this because he put no effort into the work or the project. He didn't attend any of the groups meetings and didn't prepare for the trial. I read the short story on the case study and saw more than one situation where Donald did not help. The teacher gave the group a grade as a whole, and without the effort of Donald, the grade went down.

Journal Entry 28:
Write about a time when you kept a commitment that was difficult to keep.
 2.  One time when I kept a commitment was when I kept someones secret. My friend told me something and made me promise that I wouldn't tell anyone. My friends boyfriend found out that I knew and begged me to tell him. It was so hard not to because I knew she was going to tell him in the end. I came to my senses and realized that it wasn't my place to tell him, and if she wanted to know then she could tell him. It was annoying listening to him constantly beg for me to spill the information but I just couldn't do it, I promised. I kept my mouth closed and kept my friends trust as well.

CHAPTER ONE

Chapter 1: Journal entry one -
1. In your journal, write the eight areas of the self assessment and record your scores for each, as follows:
1.Accepting personal responsibility- 54
2.Discovering self-motivation-60
3.Mastering self-management-45

4.Employing interdependence-51
5.Gaining self-awareness-4
6.Adopting lifelong learning-52
7.Developing emotional intelligence-56
8. Believing in myself-54
2.  Question: Write about the areas on the self- assessment in which you had your highest scores.

By taking this self- assessment, I learned that my highest score was in Discovering self motivation. I am not surprised with scoring high in this area because I think it's relevant to me. I am usually good with motivating myself to get things done. I think self motivation is more important that motivation from anyone else because i believe you will only do your best at something when its something that you want to do

3. Question: Write about the areas on the self assessment in which you had your lowest scores.

After tallying up my score, I came to find out that Mastering self management was my lowest area. This surprised me because I am usually good with taking blame in a situation even when it is not my fault. I do get frustrated with things like bad teaching and I am guilty of blaming my bad grade on the teacher which I do need to change. During this course, I would like to make myself more responsible of things I do and choices I make.

Chapter 1: Journal Entry Two

1. Contrast the surface culture of the last school you attended with that of your present school.
1. Teachers treatment of students -
High school teachers and college professors are totally different. It was quite a change going from high school to college classes because of the way the students get treated. In high school, teachers are much more strict about what you're aloud and not aloud to do. In college you kind of do as you want, to an extent. In college you can leave when you want, and in high school you have to get permission. For example, if you need to go to the bathroom in college you just get up and go, in high school you have to ask the teacher and if she says so you can't go. In high school teachers are also more careful with their choice of words. In the college classes I've had so far, pretty much anything was aloud to be said during a discussion.

1. Courses offered -
At the high school I go to, your class choice is very limited. They have the basic subjects and electives taken during high school, including things like math, history, science, and English, band, P.E., etc. College's have the same type core classes as high schools but go to a much higher level. Their electives are offered at a much broader range of things and don't last as long as high school classes do.

2. Time -
The amount of time you spend at high school is not comparable to the time you spend at high school. During high school, you have 7 periods a day and go to the same classes 50 minutes a day, 7 days a week. In my college class, I only had to go one night a week for 2 hours and 45 minutes. Your punishment is also worse when you're late to a high school class than when you're late to a college class.

2. Homework -
Homework in high school is given more often and at a repeatedly. In high school there are many classes that give homework every day. In college you usually have one assignment a week. You may have to go deeper and work at a higher level during your college assignments but you always have longer to do them than you have for a high school assignment. College professors are harder and more tough on grading than high school teachers are.

2. Class Discussions
In a college class, discussions happen a lot, more often than they do in a high school class. In high school ,you have to raise your hand and wait your turn to speak. On the other hand, in college classes everyone kind of just talks when they please and the discussions go out to a much broader range of things. High school discussions are limited because you can't always say how you feel or what you think about something and in college, professors don't watch what you say as closely as teachers do.

Chapter 1: Journal Entry Three
   1. Identify one thing you have learned simply because you enjoyed learning.

1. One thing I enjoyed learning was using a camera. I am good with taking and editing pictures all from taking one class. During the class, I was very interested in learning how to take good, detailed pictures, so learning how to use the camera was very easy. I also think it was easy me for to learn because taking pictures is a hands on activity and I learn much better with hands on or demonstrations. Reading a book or listening to someone talk about something doesn't interest me, so sometimes I don't retain the information.

   2. With a focus on the information or skill identified in Step 1, write answers to each of the following questions.

a. How did you gather the information or skills you needed to learn this?
I gathered the information in learning this by looking through the menu and settings on the camera.
b. What did you do to learn the information or skills needed to learn this?
I took pictures with different settings and changed them until I thought the picture looked best.
c. What else did you do to learn this?
I also watched videos on how to use the camera and tried to learn things about set up, background lightings, and how to get the best pictures possible.
d. How often did you engage in learning this, how long did you usually spend?
I engage in taking pictures a lot. I took pictures when my brother was born, I take pictures when we go on family vacations, or if I see something pretty outside.
e. When I first started messing with the camera I tried to do at least one photo shoot a week.
f.  What feedback did you use to determine how well you had learned this?
My mom let me take some of her wedding pictures, which told me that I must not have been too bad.
g. How did you feel when you engaged in learning this?
I was always and still always get very excited when I get a pretty picture. I feel like I have accomplished something.
h. What were the rewards for learning this?
The rewards to learning how to use the camera was finding something that I enjoy to do, I love capturing beautiful moments.

3.  Write about the key points you have learned or relearned about learning and how you will use this knowledge to maximize your learning in college.

By reading and writing about learning, I have realized that you have to give something your all and get interested, to get the best outcome. Try and broaden your learning strategies and make learning more fun. Being organized is also a good way to keep your school life together. Don't always do the minimum work either, go farther into what you're learning and try and learn as much as possible.

Chapter 1: Journal Entry four
1. In your journal, write a list of 10 or more of your personal strengths.
1- Strengths

6. I help others as much as possible
7. Socially: I have a good amount of friends
8. I know between right and wrong
9. Emotionally: I am good with holding myself together
10. I don't let anyone make choices for me

6. I let others bring me down
7. I tend to procrastinate
8. I hold my emotions in
9. I don't like other people telling me what to do
10. I don't exercise a lot.

3. Using the information in steps 1 and 2 and score #8 on your self assessment, write about the present state of your self esteem.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I think my self esteem is about a 7. My score in section #8 of the self-assessment was 54. I think my self-esteem is lower than it should be because I get jealous very easily. I don't like being around girls that are prettier than me or people that don't like me. I also think it's because I don't think I'm gorgeous. I don't think I'm ugly but I think I could be better looking. I tend to be very shy if I don't know people because I don't want to get judged. I'm happy with myself, but if I could fix my flaws I would.
